Prospective clients get an answer, even when you're busy.

People call a law firm when something has just gone wrong. If no one answers, they call the next firm on the list.

Updated · by the Nerro team

Nerro's AI answers your firm's calls, gathers intake details from prospective clients (who they are, how to reach them and what the matter is about) and passes them to your team. It flags urgent matters, like a deadline today or someone in custody, and transfers them. It's instructed never to give legal advice or discuss an existing client's case, and it doesn't decide whether the firm takes a matter.

What it does on an intake call.

From Nerro's Legal Intake and Existing Client Line templates.

Gathers intake details
Name, contact details, what the matter is about and the other people or companies involved, for your team's review and conflict check.
Flags urgent matters
A deadline today, someone in custody or a restraining order is transferred to your team; if no one picks up, you're emailed at once.
Existing clients
Takes a message for the right person and never discusses the case.
Says what it is
It says it's an AI assistant at the start of the call, not a lawyer.

Where your intake team or a lawyer is better.

Where the other option is the better choice.

  • Assessing the case, conflicts and whether to take it.
  • Distressed callers who need a person right away.
  • Callers who spoke with a person were far more likely to recommend the firm (Clio, 2024).

What the research says.

Only figures we could trace to the original source.

  1. In Clio's secret-shopper test of 500 firms by phone, 27% couldn't be reached at all and only 43% responded to voicemails. 79% of consumers expected a reply within 24 hours.

  2. In Clio's 2024 test, 40% of firms answered the phone (56% in 2019). Of the firms that didn't answer, IAALS reports "48% did not do either" (answer or call back).

Can an AI do legal intake?

It can gather intake details and get urgent matters to a person. It doesn't give legal advice, assess the case or decide whether the firm takes it; your team does.

Does it give legal advice?

No. It's told never to give legal advice or an opinion on a case, and to say it can't when asked.

Does it create an attorney-client relationship?

It's set up not to: it says it's an AI assistant, not a lawyer, gives no advice and doesn't accept matters. Information a prospective client shares can still create duties for your firm under ABA Model Rule 1.18, so gather only what a conflict check needs, and check with your ethics counsel.

Does it run a conflict check?

No. It asks for the names of the other people or companies involved, so your team can run one; the check is yours.

What does it do with urgent matters?

A deadline today, someone in custody or a restraining order is transferred to a person. If no one can take it, the details are saved and you're emailed straight away.

Does it connect to Clio or MyCase?

Not yet. Intake details arrive in Nerro and your email, and can go to other tools through Zapier or webhooks.

What about confidentiality?

No audio is recorded; transcripts are kept for the period you choose and each firm's data is kept separate. Our AI model and speech providers process the call's text to run the call. Review that against your duties under ABA Formal Opinion 512 and your state bar's guidance.

Nerro gathers intake information only. It does not give legal advice, form an attorney-client relationship or decide whether to take a case. Your firm stays responsible for supervising it under your state's professional-conduct rules.
