A phone menu, or an AI that listens?
"Press 1 for sales" is cheap and predictable. It also makes the caller do the sorting. Here's what changes when the caller can just say what they need.

An IVR phone menu asks callers to press keys or say a menu word, then routes them to a person or a recording. An AI voice agent lets the caller say what they need in their own words, then answers the question, books the appointment or transfers to the right person itself. A menu is cheaper and fully predictable; an AI handles the call instead of sorting it, but it needs your business details to answer well.
Side by side.
A standard press-a-key phone menu compared with Nerro's AI voice employee.
| Question | Phone menu (IVR) | Nerro AI |
|---|---|---|
| How the caller starts | Listens to options, presses a key | Says what they need |
| What it does | Routes the call | Answers, books, takes a message or transfers |
| After hours | Usually a recording or voicemail | Answers and takes details or books |
| Predictability | Exactly the same every time | Follows your rules, but words vary |
| Setup | Recordings and a routing tree | Your business details; Nerro writes the employee |
| What you see after | Call logs | Transcript, summary and what it did |
What the AI does with the call.
The jobs a menu hands to someone else.
- Answers the question
- Hours, services, prices and area, from your business details. When it doesn't know, it says so.
- Books
- Checks real availability and books, moves or cancels, with a booking code.
- Routes by meaning
- "My basement is flooding" goes to your emergency number; a billing question gets a message.
- Hands off
- Transfers to a person with a short intro, or takes a message when no one can pick up.
When a phone menu is still the right tool.
Where the other option is the better choice.
- You only need to split calls between a few departments and people are always there to answer.
- You need identical, auditable wording on every call.
- Callers pay or enter account numbers by keypad: Nerro is instructed never to ask for or repeat card numbers.
- Your call volume is huge and the cost per call has to be close to zero.
What the research says.
Only figures we could trace to the original source.
In a 2021 survey of 500 US adults who had called customer service in the past year, 60% said they press 0 for an agent very often or often, and 73% had to repeat what they'd already entered in the menu. The survey was commissioned by eGain, which sells contact-center software.

What is the difference between IVR and an AI voice agent?
An IVR routes calls through a menu of key presses or set phrases. An AI voice agent holds a conversation: the caller says what they need, and it answers, books or transfers.
Is a conversational IVR the same thing?
Close. "Conversational IVR" usually means a menu you can speak to instead of pressing keys; it still routes the call. An AI voice agent like Nerro also does the work: it answers questions and books appointments.
Can I keep my phone menu and add AI?
Yes. Point one menu option, or your after-hours and no-answer forwarding, at your Nerro number.
Will the AI make things up?
It's instructed to answer only from your business details and to say when it doesn't know, and it practices on trick questions before it goes live. Like any AI it can still get things wrong, so every call has a transcript you can check. It reports a booking or message as done only once the system confirms it.
Can callers still reach a person?
Not always live. During your hours it transfers to the number you choose when asked; otherwise, or if no one picks up, it takes a message and says someone will call back.
Can it take payments?
No. Nerro is instructed never to ask for or repeat card numbers, and to stop callers who start reading one. Keep a keypad payment line if you need one.
How long does setup take?
You describe your business, Nerro writes the employee, and it practices on test calls before it answers your phone. No routing tree to build.
Comparisons describe typical options, not any specific provider. Cost figures use the public sources shown and the assumptions stated; your costs will differ. Nerro prices as of the date above.
